We made it!  We actually packed up the car and drove 440 miles to Northern California to surprise my grandparents on their 80th birthday.  Honestly, it wasn’t as bad as I was thinking it would be.  We timed it out nicely that we drove a couple hours, stopped for lunch, drove a few more hours (during Caden’s naptime), stopped for a break, and then drove the rest of the way (while Caden watched movies on the portable DVD player we borrowed… really, it’s a wonderful invention!)  Once we were there we stayed in a hotel room together too.  It really wasn’t as bad as you might think.  It was an Embassy Suites so there were actually two rooms, a living room with a fold out bed and a bedroom.  So, Jacob and I stayed out in the living room while Caden and Geric stayed in the bedroom.  The second night Caden and Jacob stayed in the bedroom together (because we got back too early for us to fall asleep) and they stayed in there together until Jacob woke up at 2:30am… and Caden didn’t even stir.  It inspired us to put them in the same room at home.  Anyway, it was a really good time and we really loved surprising my grandparents, who were REALLY surprised.

Here’s a little fun in the hotel.

Get him, Jacob!  Karma…

Family photos… happy birthday Grandma and Papa!

The ride home… time for a snooze!

The view from the 5… it was really pretty!

  1. Sis… we had a good time too! That is a great picture of Jacob finally getting Caden… I’ll bring my camera on Wednesday and you can download the “Steevie Wonder” Action…. it’s hilarious! Love u!

  2. It’s always nice to realize your kids have a capacity for something you didn’t realize, long car trips, sharing a room, sleeping in the car…

If we drive to CA, it is about 18 hours with stops to get to Rancho. That is a hard hard day. The last time we did it was when Aubrey turned one. I am hoping that 2 kids travel better than 1 since they can entertain each other. I am sure there are many road trips in our future once we need to pay for 4 plane tickets.

  3. That looked like tons of fun! I can’t wait until Noah is big enough for road trips. Last year we drove out to Texas to see my dad for Christmas and we’re going again next year but I’m thinking we’ll have to fly because a two day (24hr straight) road trip might be too much for a 14mon old.
